Shern grew up in Washington DC with a German-speaking hippie mom, which meant a lot of skateboarding but summers at meditation ashrams, so of course he moved to Australia to study philosophy and become a lawyer before realizing he was really just a contrarian, which naturally led him to Hong Kong where he shot loads of canto-pop music videos and commercials all over Asia before making his way to New York and winning a bunch of awards — like at Cannes and Berlinale — for his stripped-down storytelling and distinctive visual style. But when he’s not crafting stories for great brands, Shern can be found changing iPhone batteries for his friends or planning a motorcycle trip through Patagonia that he swears he’ll get around to eventually, and he never travels without his climbing shoes because he loves planning for all contingencies.
